Exercises

Any of you have some good writing exercises to share? I'm Too Tired from grading to start anything big right now but am longing for some literary calisthenics. Poetry, fiction, whatever you've got.

Something I occasionally do when I need a challenge is try and write a scene (of something I'm already working on, or something entirely new) and give myself a strange goal.

Once, I tried to work the title of a poem into the dialogue, so it flowed naturally.

Something I often try (and usually fail at) is to write an entire scene without starting a single sentence with a pronoun.

Sometimes I look up old NaNoWriMo dares and try and make them honestly work in a story, regardless of how strange and bizarre they may be on their own.

Um, something that often leads to strange and interesting places, for me and my friends, at least, is to have a "Start a story with this line" competition. Everyone starts with the same opening line (like "Where the hell are my pants?") and then you just run with it, making up characters and situations at will.
